LilliBean's Collections

Remember when I told you I collect a lot of shit?

Well today I have another collection for you – this one is not so beautiful as the sea urchins, but I love it all the same.

You see – I love lettering. You could say I am slightly obsessed with it. I love the flow of words, the curl of lines, the way lettering can be totally different every time you write even though you follow the same steps + the same lines.

And combined with colours, with whimsy with doodles. Well lets just say I am in artistic heaven.

The other day I was sorting through three huge boxes of crap from my mums, that she has diligently been storing for me and my sibs for nearly 20 years. In among the stuff that needed to be tossed (sorry mum!) and resorted (hello my tiffee tiger!) I found my ‘books’ of ‘collections’

I couldn’t believe I still had these…..’These’ were old exercise books and I would spend hours cutting and pasting in the appropriate images.

Like my ‘lyrics’ book (that I had either painstakingly written out by hand, or cut out of ‘smash hits’ magazine.) or the ‘horse’ book: A collection of horse images (mostly from the Saturday racing guide). I had a ‘yummy’ recipes book: This is full of chocolate + pasta recipes. Not chocolate pasta…although that could be awesome.

And then I found my lettering book.

Lettering Book

A book full of font that I found in magazines. I would draw some in and use if for inspiration for school projects.

The magazines back in the 80’s + 90’s were full of amazing font.

And looking through it I am reminded of how much I loved spending time on this. (If only I had applied myself as much to my homework …)

And I was flicking through this book + I started thinking about how much I love lettering, and writing quotes – like the weird quote I shared the other week.

I have also been thinking about how much I love to share stuff with you guys + that I haven’t done anything new over the last few months.

So I have a challenge for you.

In the comments below – share with us your favourite quote – it can be anything you want.

And I will illustrate and you guys can download it free. To hang up where you see it everyday, to use as your desktop or phone screen saver.

Once a month for the next year, I will share the latest download here on LilliBean Designs.

And here is the first one you can download:

  1. Laura (PA Pict) says:

I had a period in my teens where I collected fonts. I was studying Art and Design at school so I guess they were useful for the design element of my studies. I, however, have a mother who does not archive things so my notebooks “disappeared” when I left home at 17. It is very cool, therefore, that you have access to your old books and can draw inspiration from them.

Ha! You sure do love a good font!
Looking back at my old exam papers they all have portraits on the back of every page. I wonder if I finished with time to spare just do get to the drawing.
As for sayings, you know I love ‘Expect Wonderful’. 😀
