Welcome to another ‘Evolution of a Painting’ post.
Grounded was a painting which I struggled with – when I did the initial sketch I thought it was going to go one way, but I didn’t like the sketch so I put it away for a couple of weeks.
In the prep for the markets at the beginning of the month I pulled out the canvas again. I thought to myself “well if I don’t like it I can always paint over it”, so I pulled on my big girl pants and moved her to my studio desk.
In the initial flurry of painting I forgot to grab a few shots so we start our journey with her face almost completely finished
the evolution of ‘grounded’
I felt very strongly that this girl was an angel when I sketched out the initial drawing + as always I started with her face – once I finished she was still angelic look so I decided she should stay one!
This photo is a bit shine the light reflecting of the wings looks awesome though – much more subtle in life than under the camera lens. I used this awesome iridescent medium I picked up years ago. You can add it to any colour to make it shimmer – tell me who doesn’t love a bit of shimmer.
I hated the colour of the skirt so I ended up changing it later.
I also decided to make the ‘belt’ the same colour as her top + add a whimsy ribbon to her attire.
You can see the true colour of the wings in this picture – there is a lovely shimmer but still transparent enough so that the background can shine through.
Detail work on the ribbon + her arm.
So I wasn’t sure what she was looking at, and I decided that I wanted to continue the foliage theme that had seem to run through my paintings this month, but I wanted to include a friend for her as well. This seemed to be the best solution.
When I started painting her hair, I was interrupted by one of the girls and when I came back I thought how awesome she looked with short hair…. I had to take a photo to use for a future painting maybe!
I hope you enjoyed the evolution of this painting. For a painting that I wasn’t sure I was going to like, I actually enjoyed the entire process of this and I really liked where the painting finished up.
