DAY FIVE: DECORATE YOUR CARDS.

Every Christmas I want to create handmade cards for the special people in my life…

…and every year I seem to run out of time + the energy to make them. And as we pack the Christmas tree back into it’s box for another year, I remember all these fun little ideas that I wanted to do, and yet they too are packed away in a dusty box until next year.

BUT NOT THIS YEAR!

I just had to share with you how I made them and the download sheets I used to make them, because they seriously took less than an afternoon to make and maybe you (or your kids) would like to make a unique one-of-a-kind card for your loved ones this Christmas.

WHEN I STARTED I DIDN’T HAVE A PLAN

I just knew I wanted something a little Christmassy so I sketched a couple of angels, an elf, a reindeer + a snowy bauble. (Download Links for these at the end of the post)CARD i

I then pulled out some card stock I had (but you could make your own from a piece of cardboard), and every single ‘christmas’ themed thing in my studio – I’m talking scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper scraps, tissue paper, old christmas tags, recipes + dictionary pages that I have.

(Yes my name is Kirstin and I am a member of the hoarders collective!)

Along with some glitter, my glue stick, sharpie pens, pencils + one of my favourite artists tool – the white posca pen! (These are available from art + craft type shops and are hands down the BEST white pen I have found.)

I WORKED ON BOTH CARDS AT THE SAME TIME…

but I will share the process of each card separately for continuity.CARD ii

I started on my brown card + glued down a bit of a christmas pudding recipe from one of my grans old cook books, a gift bag that I’d kept + snow flake wrapping paper.

CARD v

I then glued down my angel + started colouring her in. You could use crayon, watercolour or acrylic paints or even decoupage  your angel if you want.

CARD vi

I used a mixture of my kids pencils + my water colour pencils. I also used a black pencil scribbled around her outline to make her pop a bit more from the background.

CARD x

I watered down some gold acrylic paint for her ‘halo’, wings, sign + trimmings.

CARD xvi

I then went over the lines with a black marker, wrote my christmas message and added a bit of shading.

CARD TWO…

This was a shimmery white card that I picked up during a sale and didn’t realise it was shimmery (I mean really… when I got home it was fairly obvious – I blame the wee Beastie (baby number three) for distracting me in the shop!)

CARD iii

Again I did’t really know what I was going to make, and ripped up a bit of paper. When I lay the present paper down, it reminded me of the bauble that I had sketched so I decided to make it a bit of a landscape – with the snow flakes the sky.

CARD iv

After cutting out my sketches and playing a bit this was my favourite composition so I glued it down.

CARD viii

I again used a mixture of pencils and added a rough shadow for my elements

CARD ix

My reindeer needed something a bit ‘extra’ so when in doubt add gold bling!

CARD xii

LOVE this pen! It draws on absolutely anything. I used it to add snowflakes to the card itself, colour in the trees + add some cute white spots to my reindeer.

CARD xiii

Using my black marker to make my images stand out. See how much of a difference such a simple thing makes.

AND THAT IS REALLY HOW SIMPLE IT IS.

And then you have made something unique and beautiful for your favourite people this christmas!

CARD xiv

I had thought to give these to my two gorgeous grand mothers, but Bean + Bug (two of my three girls) have already claimed these for their teachers. I guess I will have to make some more, but considering the whole project took less than an afternoon I will have time to make some more.

So now it’s your turn!

I have two pdf versions of the original sketches I used that you can download. An Angels pack + X’mas pack. You can download either or both by clicking on the images below. (Any problems with the download please email me)
