DAY NINE: IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS….

When I was younger my nan’s Christmas treat for us was to pick my sister and I up and take us to the local park where the Churches would hold a combined carol service.

We would sit with Nan on our picnic blanket with these little styrofoam cups which we would punch a hole through and a white tapered candle stuck through it.

We loved going, but by the end of the service we would have melted the styrofoam with the candle and would be dripping wax on our fingers…’cause…well that’s what you do with candles right?!?

These days the carols in town are held in the local Japanese Gardens. A beautiful spot that, where the rest of the town is sun burnt to a crisp brown, the gardens are green + lush.

The draw back to having a summer Christmas though is that no longer can we have naked flames (there is usually a total fire ban!) and often you will be sitting in 40°C (104°F) heat (like we were yesterday) and the retreating sun seems to take F O R E V E R to go down.

A FAMILY TRADITION

But despite the heat this is one night of the year that we would willingly leave the air conditioned comfort of our house a sit sweltering and sweating for. Well Mac would probably prefer not to but he is out voted every year by four eager girls.

Carols - i

We arrive early to grab the best position, with our picnic basket full of treats and our esky full of cold beverages.

The kid leave us for the stage area as soon as we’ve gone over the ground rules, (that is ‘You will NOT go near the duck pond, you will NOT go near the Koi pond and you will NOT under any circumstance go into the gift shop! (Think Bull + China Shop!)), slather them in sun screen and cover them in bug repellant.

Carols - iiAnd for the next three hours, we watch the kids dance tirelessly, listen to some very talented local singers and then we watch the kids go mental when a jolly big man in a very hot red suit arrives on his golf buggy driven by a very tall elf.
Carols - iiiAnd then when it is finally dark, and the last carol is sung, we pack up all out stuff (which has yet again been spread out everywhere), have a last minute “Where are your shoes?” search and a final “Wee Beastie, off the stage and lets go.” hop in the car and head home.

The girls tiredly drop into bed (clothes and all) and Mac and I drop tiredly onto the lounge.

CAROLS ALL DECEMBER??

I know there are many people who enjoy Christmas carols all December, but although I like them, there are only so many hours that I can listen to them.

I have about ten different Christmas albums on my playlist so that I won’t easily bore of them.

My favourites albums this year (and it changes every year!) include:

‘Wintersong’ – Sarah McLachlan
‘A very She + Him Christmas’ – She + Him
‘Christmas’ – Michael Bublé
+ The Glee Christmas Album

I would love to find a good mash up Christmas Album (I am totally loving mash ups at the moment thanks in part to Pitch Perfect and a really cool podcast that I’ve been listen to this year.)

SO WHAT ABOUT Y’ALL?

What’s your favourite Christmas music? Who fills your house with Chrissy joy? Do you have a favourite song or album? I would love to hear what music inspires you at Christmas.
